The Library finally has confirmation on the days our parking lot will be resurfaced, fixed, and underground drainage added. Thanks to the City’s Public Works Department for helping us arrange this project! Weather permitting the work will take place Wednesday, November 2, through Friday, November 4. Parking will be limited during this period. It is too late to change the date materials will be due back during this time. However, we will not charge any fines on materials due those days! Check our website and social media for updates or any changes to the dates. We know it is an inconvenience but we hope to get rid of the potholes and puddles this fall, well in advance of the winter season.
Speaking of fall, we know it brings pumpkins and falling leaves, but it also brings progress reports and parent/teacher conferences. The library has the tools your child needs to tackle his assignments and accomplish his learning goals. Did you know we offer free after school and weekend tutoring? Our tutors are part of a joint program with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and the America Reads initiative. Schedule a half hour session on Monday through Thursday from 4-8 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., or Sunday 1-4 p.m. You may schedule two free sessions per child, per week. Call (618)632-3783 ext. 2 to schedule help with any subject area.
Does your child know the capital of Ohio? Do they know how many islands comprise Micronesia? Find the answers to these and other geographic questions on our online database, Culturegrams. This fantastic resource offers information about the 50 U.S. States, the Canadian Provinces and the countries of the world. You can hear a sound byte of a national anthem being played or the warble of a state bird. You can print a recipe unique to a region or build a graph or table comparing data from various countries of the world. Go to: ofpl.info/kids and scroll down to “Kids Resources.”
It is almost Halloween so picture this scary scenario… your child comes to you on Sunday afternoon because he has an assignment due on Monday morning and he forgot his textbook. Stay calm and come to the library. We have textbooks from the O’Fallon schools and we can help.
Christmas is around the corner and we’ve got a great way for you to shop AND benefit the library. Barnes and Noble Book Store is sponsoring a Book Fair on Sunday, November 13 and a portion of the proceeds from the day’s sales will benefit the library. All you do is mention the O’Fallon Public Library when paying for your items at check-out. Come to the library from now until November 12 and a special edition coloring sheet, created by local artist Mary Ann Tutka will be available for children to complete. These sheets will be displayed at Barnes and Noble during the Book Fair.
Library staff will be on hand from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. and we will have book giveaways, a Dewey Decimal contest, a farmyard photo booth, library trivia, library cards for O’Fallon residents and more. If registering for a library card, please bring an official piece of mail with your O’Fallon address and a picture I.D. At 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. local author Josie Hladick, illustrator Mary Ann Tutka, and farm/therapy dog Bella will present a story time centered around their books about the farm in the forest. We will play farmyard bingo and you may win a prize! Face painting will occur from 2-4 p.m. and children may select their favorite literary animal character such as Peppa Pig or Pete the Cat.
There will be two amazing gift baskets full of books and prizes to give away. One basket will be at Barnes and Noble and the other at the O’Fallon Library. After you enter the drawing at one location, take your special ticket to the other location for a chance to win a second basket.
The Library is open November 11, Veteran’s Day, and some special activities for kids in kindergarten through sixth grade will be happening. From 1-3 p.m. come and play the newest board games selected by Ashely, from Fantasy Books and Games. She will teach us how to play and she will even bring some fun crafts along too. We will have tasty snacks and lots of fun so bring a friend with you!
