O’FALLON – The O’Fallon Public Library held a celebration for the Chinese New Year. Celebrating the year of the rooster, the children’s department welcomed children and their families for the special event.
Youth services manager Teri Rankin read “The Nian Monster” by Andrea Wang with pictures by Alina Chau. Children were visited by a dragon during the story. After teaching some facts about Chinese New Year, the librarians set up different craft stations where children could make Chinese drums to ward off the bad spirits, color pictures and dragon masks, and make calendars. The children were also served a meal of fried rice, wontons and orange slices. Each attendee was handed a gift bag when they left that held fun surprises like Asian candy, ribbon streamers and necklaces with Chinese characters. Children’s books about Chinese New Year were also laid out for children to check out if they wished. (O’Fallon Weekly Photos by Angela Simmons)
