O’FALLON – Members of the O’Fallon Woman’s Club, along with community members and Boy Scouts from Pack 94, gathered for a patriotic flag ceremony on July 1. The monthly ceremony, which took place at Memorial Corner, honored Torpedoman 3rd Class Fred Edsel Schempp.
Schempp, born in O’Fallon, enlisted in the US Navy in 1938 when he was 17 years old, and then re-enlisted in 1942. He then volunteered for submarine service, became a Torpedoman 3rd Class and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
The last time he would return to O’Fallon was on a furlough in April of 1942 after his father, Christ Schempp, a World War I veteran, passed away.
