The O’Fallon Woman’s Club held their August flag ceremony this past Saturday at Memorial Corner and honored the memory of Private Russell E. Kuehn.
Kuehn moved to O’Fallon in 1917 with his family when his father, Marcel Kuehn, bought the O’Fallon Progress. After graduating from OTHS in 1933, he wrote and worked for multiple newspapers before enlisting in the military.
O’Fallon Historical Society President Brian Keller wrote “He enlisted in the Marine Corps on February 13, 1942. He was killed in action on January 28, 1943 at Guadalcanal during the last days of Japanese resistance. He was returned to the United States in 1948 and was buried at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Shiloh with full military honors.”
