For O’Fallon Cross Country, making it to the IHSA State Finals is more than a cap to a great season; it’s the expectation.
The Panthers, fresh off a second place finish in the IHSA Regional just a week ago, needed someone to step up big at the Granite City Sectional if they were going to be running in Peoria the following weekend.
Enter Lucas Capistrant.
“Going into the sectional, we weren’t worrying about other teams there, since we knew we had the ability as a team to advance,” Capistrant said. “We just focused on ourselves and our individual races.”
The senior turned in his biggest performance of the season, running a 14:56 while placing second overall, just microseconds behind Sectional Champion Andrew O’Keefe of Granite City.
“It was a great feeling, being able to keep up with him and catch him off guard a bit on the last stretch of the course,” Capistrant told the Weekly. “Me personally, though, I didn’t care what place I finished, I just wanted to break 15 minutes for the three miles of that race.”
