Senior running back, Mason Hewitt showed up big time in this week’s home opener win against non-conference opponent Normal West. The senior captain ran all over the defense, leading his team in rushing with 275 yards on 29 carries. Hewitt would then average 9.5 yards on each carry for the night, with two touchdowns.
When asked about his senior running backs performance, Head Coach Brandon Joggerst said, “Mason ran just as strong at the end of the game as he did in the beginning. His durability and power was shown this past week.” Coach Joggerst also went on to say that Hewitt broke an OTHS school record with 500 total yards on offense.
The team captain also broke away from defenders scoring a 50 yard touchdown run. Hewitt, already through two games this season, has 363 yards on 45 carries. Mason’s season is just starting, and he is already looking like a player that opponents are not looking forward to face. His season is off to a very promising start, and the Panthers plan to feed off of his talent in upcoming games.
Leading his team in all-purpose yards with 615, the Panthers plan to keep using Hewitt in all aspects of the game. Hewitt plans to be one of top players in the Southwestern Conference, and his play is definitely showing he deserves to be amongst the top. Coach Joggerst also said, “Mason is a very hard worker and comes to practice everyday and works hard. This way he has an edge on his opponents each week.”
Mason has future plans to play football at the college level, but has yet to decide where he would like to attend. Mason Hewitt is the son of Wade and Debbie Hewitt. Hewitt plans to return to the field and showcase himself again this week against Belleville West.
