Rarely does elite athletic talent mix with stellar academics, but that’s certainly the case with OTHS Swimmer Natalie Edwards, this issue’s Athlete of the Week.
Edwards, a senior, is coming off an extremely impressive week in the pool, which featured four top three finishes. She helped the 200 Medley Relay team, also featuring Nicole Moran, Sierra Workman, and Grace Williamson, grab second place at the Classic City Invitational held in Springfield, Illinois on Saturday.
She then followed that successful effort with a second place finish in the 200 Freestyle, which would serve as a prelude for her winning effort during the much longer and more grueling 500 Freestyle.
Edwards would wrap up her weekend in contributing to O’Fallon’s second place finish in the 400 Freestyle Relay. The squad was made up of Edwards, Moran, Workman, and Sydney Keefe.
“Natalie is always a candidate for Athlete of the Week. She’s that kind of athlete,” Head Coach Suzanne Gibson remarked about her star. “She already has a pair of visits set up to attend Division 1 universities on scholarship.”
Natalie swims with the Edwardsville Breakers swim club outside of competition for the Panthers, and has not made a decision on where to sign for college quite yet, although it is becoming quite clear that she will have her pick of school to attend and compete for under scholarship.
Edwards is a member of the OTHS National Honor Society and has been an OTHS Scholar Athlete every year spent at O’Fallon. She is a member of the Greater Belleville Area Youth Leadership Council and the OTHS Athletic Department Leadership Council, as well as being named as one of ten Ozark LSC Athlete Delegates to USA Swimming. She is also ranked in the top 85 of her class at OTHS.
Natalie is the daughter of Rick and Mary Beth Edwards.
