Seniors Mackenzie Shelton and Katie Halwachs have been a dominant doubles team on the tennis court all season. The duo has been completely unstoppable thus far throughout the season. Shelton and Halwachs are 7-0 against opponents outscoring them 55-15. The dynamic duo has dominated every opponent they have faced this season.

Recently, Shelton and Halwachs won the Bloomington Gold Invitational with an overall record of 4-0 finishing in first place. With help from the ladies, the Lady Panthers finished third overall as a team.

“Their first place finish was a big part of the team coming in third place overall in the 16-team tournament,” Coach Erin Thoman said.

This is their first season playing doubles together and the results have been tremendous with an undefeated record of 7-0. Mackenzie plays #1 in singles, and Katie plays #2 in singles.

“I expect to continue to play my best and try to end the season with the best record possible,” Katie Halwachs said. “Being a captain means incorporating new team members into our tennis family, leading by example, working hard, and sharing the knowledge I have gained from my years on the team. Being a part of this team has taught me so much, and I have had so much fun. I want to pass on this experience to the younger team members.”

When asked about her expectations for the season, Mackenzie Shelton said, “I will continue to play my best mentally, physically, and to bond with team each day.”

Mackenzie loves the role of being a Senior Captain saying, “I plan to raise the future top varsity to prepare them to play tennis at a higher level, and to encourage lower level players to work hard and improve. Being a captain of this team has taught me emotional and physical responsibility, and has inspired me to perform well every day.”

Thoman says Mackenzie and Katie are very consistent and patient players.

“They have great communication and play really well together. They provide great leadership for our team as a whole,” said Thoman.”
