January 24, 1923 – March 26, 2017
Irene was raised on a rural Missouri farm along with five siblings. During high school she was a basketball star, then at age 18 she moved to Santa Monica, Calif. and became a “Rosie the Riveter” building WWII aircraft. She married the love of her life in 1943, Chief Master Sergeant Ancel Jones, an Air Force service member for 30 years. During their career they lived in Japan, Azores Islands, Guam and numerous bases in the United States. They remained together for 72 years. Together they had four sons, Gale (Jan), Terry, Stanley, and Danny (Dawn), including 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Irene loved her children and grandchildren and always helped out with their homework: she probably went through elementary and high school 10 times! She was a very particular dresser. She never went anywhere without being neatly dressed or a hair out of place. Irene has had her hair done every week using the same beautician, Carlene, for over 40 years.
Irene was a member of the O’Fallon Assembly of God Church for many years. She recently passed her driver’s test at the age of 94 years and was driving her Toyota up to her final days. She was a strong independent woman that lived her life to the fullest.
