BY TERRY CHAPMAN WEEKLY REPORTER
On the 25th of July in nearby Fairview Heights, a new primary care clinic recently opened it’s doors to the public.
Heartland Healthcare of Fairview Heights has an aura of comfortability surrounding it. The clinic itself is state of the art, and has an overall unique and welcoming atmosphere. The waiting room has an open feel, and you’ll automatically have a feeling of comfortability when you first enter. There are four exam rooms with one procedure room, as well as a room dedicated to labs and blood draws. You will instantly feel at home and relaxed at this brand new facility.
Julie Wiegers has been a family nurse practitioner for ten years. She also has experience as a nurse for 22 years. She was born and raised in Belleville and has been in private practice for the past nine years. After the physician that she was working with retired, she moved on to different things.
“Circumstances changed,” Wiegers comments, “I moved on and had this great opportunity presented.”
Dedication, devotion, and an undying love for her work is what makes Wiegers stand out as one of the best.
“I love what I do. I’m very passionate about being a nurse practitioner. A question that I get asked a lot is ‘why don’t you go on to become a physician?’ The answer is simple: because I’m a nurse. I love taking care of patients. I love talking to patients. I love making people feel better. I don’t think that there’s anything better than that.”
The clinic itself is far from original. The clinic is one of the first in the metro east to be primarily run by a nurse practitioner. Wiegers is the primary care provider.
“It’s got a great location,” Wiegers adds, “We’ve got some great area hospitals. Gateway is close by, as well as some others. We’ve got a great central location. It’s close to everything. It’s easily accessible.”
Wiegers is always accepting patients who are searching for a new primary care provider.
“I see patients 16 years of age and older. A lot of young adults outgrow their pediatricians. If you’ve outgrown your pediatrician and you don’t know who to go to, this is a really great option. As a nurse practitioner, I have the opportunity to spend a little bit more time with patients than some physicians do.”
Wiegers has a background as a family practitioner. Her experience ranges from newborns to the elderly, with her oldest patient being 106 years of age.
