The directions from a coach on the sidelines. The frantic communications from teammates on the floor. The roar of the crowd after a won point.
If not for the assistance from a set of bilateral cochlear implants, Ryan Nelson would not hear any of it.
Instead, the 2017 O’Fallon Township High School grad continues to be one of the area’s best at libero, and that talent is about to take the Greenville University volleyball commit to Asia to compete in the 2017 Summer Deaflympics in Samsun, Turkey.
“I’ve never let my hearing limit how I set my goals or how I live my life,” Nelson said. “It’s something I live with every day, but it motivates me to work that much harder so I can be the best player and person I can be.”
