tennis-resizedO’FALLON – The O’Fallon Girls Tennis team continued a promising run of play this past weekend when the team headed north to Bloomington to take part in the Bloomington Gold Invitational, turning in a promising top three finish.

The Panthers took third on Saturday, placing well behind first place Belleville East and second place Normal Community. OTHS would finish a healthy nine points ahead of fourth place (St. Louis) St. Joseph’s Academy.

The Lancers would score a tournament best 64 points, just barely edging out Normal Community High’s 63 for an impressive win. The 14 point gap between Normal Community and O’Fallon essentially turned the event into a two horse race.

Normal University, (Champaign) Centennial, Morton, Normal West, Belleville West, and Champaign Central rounded out the top 10 for the day. O’Fallon was a dominating 31 points ahead of the SWC conference foe Maroons, placing them in the top two of area teams for the day. The Panthers will face Belleville West one more time this season, on the road in Belleville on the fourth of October. It will be the team’s last regular season match before taking part in the Southwestern Conference Tournament, also at Belleville West.

Mattoon, Bloomington, and Ottawa would place ahead of Springfield, Peoria Notre Dame, and Pekin to close out the field of 16.

The Panthers took on Belleville East at home on Tuesday; a meet that went final after this issue went to print.

This Friday and Saturday are the Duals at Belleville East, followed by a Tuesday road match up with Southwestern Conference rival Edwardsville.

This tournament was not the last regular season trip to Bloomington for the Blue and Gold, as a contingent of the team is scheduled to make the trip back up north on September 27th to try and replicate the Panther success in the meet.
