O’FALLON – Familiar faces were a plenty at this year’s annual O’Fallon Ice Hockey Club alumni game.
The game features Panther players from years past as they face off against the current varsity team. For the second year straight the varsity Panther team defeated the alumni by a single goal.
Last Friday’s thrilling 9-8 finish marks just the second time since the events inception that the current roster has managed to best the alumni.
However the game was a “first” of a different kind for the Panthers, who got a chance to break in the ice at the brand new Mckendree Metro Rec Plex in O’Fallon.
“It was the first game played in the new McKendree Metro Rec Plex. The players were excited and it was great to see the turnout with the alumni,” said Panther head coach Patrick Roy.
The new state of the art facility will be the home ice for both the O’Fallon and Belleville high school club teams.
The alumni roster was filled with returning players from a variety of graduating classes. Panthers ranging from 1996 all the way to as recent as 2016 were included on the team.
Aside from being a good opportunity for older players to brush the dust off of their equipment, the game was also a chance for the team to help give back to the community. Donations of canned good for the local food pantry, as well as monetary donations for a family in need were received throughout the night. The team is continuing to accept donations during upcoming games.
O’Fallon has a busy week ahead with back to back matches against Edwardsville and Columbia.
