O’FALLON – Two miles of Interstate 64 were closed Thursday evening when a semi-truck carrying hay bales caught fire.
O’Fallon Fire Department, Fairview Heights Fire Department, and Lebanon Fire Department battled the blaze, which reignited several times in the following days. The fire department moved the hay off the trailer to spread it out.
The fire took place during rush hour, resulting in large traffic backups. Traffic was being diverted off of the highway at Illinois 159 to help reduce the wait time. O’Fallon Fire Department reports the call came in at around 5 p.m. at mile marker 13.4, near the Auffenberg Auto Mall and Sam’s Club.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is not known.
