Two Cents Worth – What’s in a name?

Two Cents Column

As many of you may know, my wife and I are preparing to have our first child in mid-May. My wife has decided that we won’t find out the gender of the child and will wait to be surprised. While I can respect the fun aspect of not knowing until the doctor says “It’s a ____!”, I’m dying to find out what we’re having.

I like to plan ahead and its proving difficult when I don’t know if we’re expecting a boy or a girl. Specifically, I’ve been absolutely stressing over a name for the child. There’s a lot that goes into a name. A name can define a person and impact them for life.

Needless to say, I’d have half the stress related to picking a name if I knew if I was picking a boys name or a girls name. But since I can’t know that, I have to struggle to come up with not one, but two names I like. Unfortunately, Laura and I are picky.

There are some rules.

First, if we have a boy, I want the middle name to be my name, Nicholas. My middle name is my dad’s first name and his middle name is his dad’s first name. I figured I’d keep it going.

Second, Laura has insisted that the name be a name you can shorten into a nickname. Like Franklin can be shortened into Frank. That sort of thing.

Third, we want a name that is spelled easily and exactly how you would think it would be spelled. No complicated spellings where a “y” is put in place of what would normally be an “i”, for example.

Fourth, we want a classic, traditional name.

Finally, we don’t want to name the child anything that starts with the letter “M” since our last name is Miller and we don’t want the double-M.

I’ve suggested “William”, and while she’s ok with it, Laura isn’t falling over deeply in love with the name. She’s suggested “Leigh” but I’m not a fan. We briefly thought about “Theodore” but those thoughts have passed.

Picking a name has proven to be very difficult and time consuming. So we’re opening it up to suggestions. What do you think would make a nice name for the newest member of the Miller family? Send me your suggestions (PLEASE!) to Nick@OFallonWeekly.com.

At this point, I’m willing to consider anything. We’re currently just calling the baby Grakathor until a better name comes along. I’m not joking…
