View of the Past: Democratic candidate for Illinois governor Dan Walker in 1971

(Contributed by Brian Keller, O’Fallon Historical Society)

This week’s view is from July 29, 1971 in the parking lot of the original Bank of O’Fallon at the southeast corner of Route 50 and Lincoln, next to Southview Plaza.  Democratic candidate for Illinois governor Dan Walker is shaking the hand of Louise Scheibel.  Walker’s sons, Dan Jr. and Charles, are standing behind him.  Walker was in O’Fallon as part of his famous 1,197 mile walking trek across Illinois, putting him on the road to election as Illinois’ 36th governor.  He took office Jan. 8, 1973 and served one term.
