View of the Past: The Magna-Fab complex fire in 1987

This week’s view is of the fire that destroyed the Magna-Fab complex at what was then an industrial park at Betty Lane, just east of Weber Road in O’Fallon.  It started at about 7 a.m. on a cloudless, windless Saturday Nov. 21, 1987 and soon morphed into a spectacular blaze.  The tall column of black smoke that rose from the area could be seen as far away as Nashville, Illinois and Interstate 70 in St. Louis.  The property is now occupied by Discount Storage.
