What’s Your Best Workout Time?

Does the early bird always get the worm or is it the night own that’s the most productive? When it comes to working out, this is a question of great debate. There’s scientific evidence to back up both, the debate has never been greater. After reading this, you may decide that you’ve figured out which one is right for you.  Luckily, thanks to the hours of operation at the MetroRecPlex, we’ve got you covered either way!

Morning Motivation:

1. Reliability: Generally speaking, it is easier for an individual to stay on track with a fitness routine that begins first thing in the morning. Usually this is because the evenings allow for less time due to events with family, evening plans, commuting, late nights in the office, and other distractions to get in the way, not to mention the fatigue that often accompanies a long day at work.

2. You’ll Avoid Crowds: Most of the time, facilities like the MetroRecPlex will see the most traffic between 5 and 8 p.m., making it a little tough to get spot you want on the HSHS Cardio Deck or in a group fitness class that you love. Overall, mornings see less movement, making morning workouts a little more streamlined. 

3. It’s Easy: You can basically go to bed in your workout clothes and wake up before you head to the Plex. It might sound weird, this works! Up and at ‘em!

4. Start Off Healthy: When they day starts with exercise, the majority of choices throughout the day meet that expectation. Those who start their day at the gym typically follow their workout with a healthy post-workout smoothie or snack and will likely have boosted water intake all morning long. Getting your workout in the morning makes it easier to incorporate a balanced breakfast into your schedule, setting you up for a day of healthy eating.

5. Sleep: Knowing you have morning workout may be motivation enough help you to want to get extra sleep instead of binging your newest favorite show. Getting enough sleep is of utmost importance when it comes to weight and health. Research has shown that people crave unhealthy food when they are sleep-deprived. Lack of sleep also raises the stress hormone cortisol, which can lead to overeating as well.

Evening Exertion

1. Strength: Hitting the snooze button a few times before you head to the weight room could hurt your ability to push yourself due to tiredness in the morning.  Plus, you’ll have had plenty of time to eat and fuel your body for a tough workout.

2. Stress: Studies have linked weight gain to increased stress levels, thanks to the release of cortisol. Even more so, research has shown that cortisol will also increase your cravings for unhealthy foods. Having an outlet like the Insanity! class or a personal training session at the end of the workday can provide a healthy way to release daily stresses—a far better option than hitting a happy hour!

3. Accountability: It tends to be easier to find a workout partner that is willing to meet you for an evening workout than it is to find one who’s up for a that early morning cardio session.

4. Competition: Weight room can push you to compete against fellow gym-goers and work harder to get the most from your routine.

5. Safety: You’ve got a lower chance of injury in the evening.  Your body and brain have been through the long day, you are awake, alert, and ready to tackle whatever you come across!

Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide what works best in your routine. Most importantly, consistency is key and working out at a time that keeps you reliable is a definite plan for success.
