Winter Fitness and Fun on Ice

Winter fun has arrived early at the McKendree MetroRecPlex in O’Fallon, Illinois where families can enjoy skating, take in a hockey game and even skate with Santa Claus.

Santa is stopping by the Poettker Arena at the MetroRecPlex on Sunday, December 10th from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM where there will be fun for the whole family including Christmas Gift Shopping by local specialty shops for parents.

This year’s photo with Santa will have a whole new twist when kids young and old will be able to strap on a pair of skates and twirl around the rink with Santa Claus.  Make plans now to attend this one of a kind event where there will also be plenty of hot chocolate to keep you warm at the premium Hot Chocolate Bar.

You don’t have to wait to get on the ice for Santa. Ice-skating is an increasingly popular way to workout in the winter. With proper training, you can learn the right technique to maximize your aerobic workout and enjoy skating for years to come.

Ice-skating is a fun form of intense cardiovascular exercise, which improves balance and builds muscle in your legs and core.  Even if you aren’t adopting ice-skating as your winter fitness routine, a trip to the rink with your family is a great way to get out of the house and exercise while also having fun.

Here are the top reasons to give skating a try this winter:

1. It’s Fitness for the Whole Family

Ice-skating can keep your whole family active and engaged, more so than other winter sports. Fairly inexpensive and open to all levels, you and your kids can skate in one place without the skill separation other activities can create. With different styles like figure skating and speed skating, everyone can pursue their interests within the bounds of the rink.

2. It’s Easy on the Joints

When we say the whole family, we mean the whole family. Ice-skating is relatively low impact, making gliding easy on the joints for grandpa and grandma. However, be sensitive to the safety concerns of older family members, they may feel more comfortable on camera duty!

3. You Can Commit All Season

Who knows, a trip to the rink may awaken a hidden talent in you or your children. Following up with lessons and training could lead to an effective and exciting new sport for your kids with hockey or figure skating.

4. It Has Benefits
Beyond Winter

An ice-skating workout can provide some necessary winter exercise, but the benefits extend past the season. By working small stabilizer muscles and improving coordination, you may notice added perks in your running, skiing or yoga workouts.

The McKendree MetroRecPlex offers a variety of times for you to try skating during public skate sessions held Monday – Friday from 3:30 to 5:30 PM and on the weekends where the public is invited to skate from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM every Friday and Saturday and on Saturday and Sunday afternoon from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

During the holidays, they are extending hours so that families can enjoy skating:

SPECIAL HOLIDAY SKATING HOURS

December 18 thru 22:     9:00 AM to 11:00 AM

December 26 thru 29:   11:15 AM – 12:45 PM

December 27 & 28: 7:00 PM – 9:30 PM

January 1 thru 4:  10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

If you don’t know how to skate, there is no need to worry.  There are lessons available at the Plex.  You can learn how to sign up on the MetroRecPlex’s website.

There is one more way you can enjoy the ice this winter and that is to take in a Collegiate Division II Hockey Game when the McKendree Bearcats take the rink for all their home games, which are played at the Plex.  For complete list of games and times visit www.MetroRecPlex.com.
